Lessons from scooping rice

Of late, I have taken to listening to FM 1003, the infotainment station arm of SPH. Everyday, they have stuff which are interesting, lame, gossipy as well as talented. My choices of words are used to describe to different programmes which I listen alot to and if you listen to the as often as I do, you would probably agree with me.

Those of you who know me for some time, know that I used to be a die hard supporter of Class95. I  never beleived I would find a better channel. And better yet, its in CHINESE. haha.

Today, they told a story which I thought is pretty meaningful and felt I should share with everyone or at the least keep it for posterity.

The story goes simply like this.

A little boy returns home one day and his mom asks if he was hungry. The little boy told his mother that he was hungry.

As the little boy would have had his lunch in school, the mother was surprised, and asked him if he had his lunch. The little boy replied that he indeed had his lunch and had a large bowl of rice at that. The mom then asked, if that was so, how could he be hungry ?

The little boy replied, that by the time he was done and wanted to go for a second bowl, the pot was empty (apparently their lunches are buffet style with limited quantities). Upon hearing this, the mother smiled at the boy and told him cryptically,"why don't you get yourself half a bowl instead?"

The little boy looked at the mother quizzically and asked how would he be full if he only took half a bowl ?

The mother again smiled and said,"If you took half a bowl initially, you would finish the rice quickly. Then  you would be able to get a full bowl when you want to refill as you would  finish earlier"

This story tells that in order to make something better, you need not change the entire thing, but how you do it.

nice. aint it? :P
